The Alexander Hotel in Cayman Brac will be the first hotel in the Sister Islands to offer the Wheego LiFe electric car for daily rental.
The new cars, which offer environmentally-conscious drivers an alternate transportation option, have been available at the hotel since Friday, 21 September, the first day all-electric cars could be registered in the Cayman Islands.
John Felder, instrumental in the push to change legislation, said that it was the culmination of more than seven years of work to bring fully electric vehicles to the Cayman Islands.
“We will welcome visitors to our islands with an emissions-free choice of transportation. When our visitors see our pristine environment, they will understand why we have worked so hard to bring electric vehicles here,” he said.
Eco-friendly
Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush recognised the efforts of Mr. Fielder’s Cayman Automotive Group for “their efforts in making the rental of electric vehicles in Cayman Brac possible”.
Mr. Bush added that it gave Cayman a landmark of being first in the Caribbean to provide an eco-friendly service to guests.
“The implementation of this ‘green’ initiative demonstrates of our country’s continuing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and hope that our visitors will also participate by renting this class of vehicle wherever available in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac,” the premier said.
The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism was also pleased to see the private sector step up, said Director of Tourism Shomari Scott.
“This befits our Cayman Islands Environmental Program for the Tourism Sector programme, which is designed to encourage the implementation of environmental best practices and improve the overall environmental performance of attractions/accommodations and suppliers within the tourism industry,” Mr. Scott said.
