Lightning strikes briefly knock out power

Utility customers along large swaths of Grand Cayman were without power for a couple hours early Monday as multiple lightning strikes disrupted the transmission system of electricity provider Caribbean Utilities Company, a company spokeswoman said.

Commercial and residential customers in parts of George Town, Prospect, Frank Sound, Rum Point, East End and Savannah lost power about 4am, said Pat Bynoe-Clarke, CUC’s manager of corporate communications.

Ms Bynoe-Clarke said power was restored to all customers by 6.10am.

Operations at four of the company’s eight major transformer substations in Grand Cayman – Rum Point, Frank Sound, Bodden Town and Prospect – were affected, Ms Bynoe-Clarke said.
