Paddlers not board with it yet

Stand up paddle boarders seem to be everywhere in the Cayman Islands.

A couple of years ago the sight of someone with a paddle board was a rarity, now people of all ages and levels of fitness are discovering what a wonderful sport it is and what a great way to enjoy the water.

They are taking their kids – and even their dogs – for a cruise along the beach, in the surf spots and sharing the waves with the traditional surfers.

They are using their boards at Paddle Fit classes with Waterman and practicing their yoga out on the water with Bliss Living Yoga.

Vacationers are finding that rental boards are a fun and affordable way to explore the beautiful coastline of Cayman. Paddle boarders were even out there with the whale shark spotted off Seven Mile Beach two weeks ago.

And now they are coming together to raise funds for the Cayman Islands Diabetes Association at the Second Annual John Bunton Memorial Stand Up Paddle Board Fundraiser on Sunday 4 November.

Last year, avid paddle boarder, Duane Magis put together the first fundraiser in memory of local businessman John Bunton who passed away from a diabetes related illness.

“Over $8,000 was raised for local charity and 70 paddle boarders enjoyed the day, despite some choppy seas,” Magis said. “And this year promises to be bigger and better with over 100 people expected to take part.”

The non-competitive group paddle will set off from Public Beach at 1pm, paddling collectively towards the Ritz and back and then a family friendly SUP regatta will be held with events and races for all ages and abilities.

Paddlers, old and new, are encouraged to take part and bring a picnic and make an afternoon of it.

The event is being sponsored by a number of local businesses, including Waterman, The Kite House, White Sands, Red Sail Sports and The Ritz are all donating rental boards to be used on the day.

There are an incredible selection of raffle prizes, with a paddle board being donated by Mega Systems, a year of unlimited yoga from Bliss Living Yoga and a range of vouchers and prizes from Lone Star, PD’s, Agua, Pool Patrol, Funky Monkey, Paige & Co, Smoothie King, Kirk Marine, Waterman, Luca, Ragazzi and many more.

Genesis Trust and Corporate Services, Fiderus, Kirk Marine, Flowers Steel Stud, Siena Tile, LG Contracting, Kings Imports, CrossFit Cayman, Cayman Islands Sheet Metal and Home Gas are all major sponsors of the event with refreshments from Cayman Distributers.

More information on the fundraiser is available from [email protected] Advanced registration is recommended and essential for hiring a rental board. The first 120 people to register will receive a rash guard from the Cayman Islands Stand Up Paddle Board Association, $10 voucher for Dukes, and a free ticket for the raffle.
