A cargo trailer caught fire Monday morning causing the closure of Elgin Avenue in George Town during rush hour traffic in Grand Cayman.
After receiving an emergency call at 7.18am, the Cayman Islands Fire Service dispatched three fire engines to the blaze near the entrance of Cricket Square. The fire consumed a trailer bearing the logo of a local landscaping company.
Firefighters doused the burning trailer, its contents and nearby pavement with water and fire retardant foam, as passersby looked on. The fire was under control by 7.45am. The road was cleared and reopened to cars by 10am.
Chief Fire Officer Dennom Bodden said a preliminary investigation indicates the fire could have been caused by an electrical malfunction in the wiring for the trailer’s signalling and brake lights.
