All Stars keep shining bright

All Stars remain the top club in local netball.

The side’s A and B teams remain unbeaten atop the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2013 Open League. The squads have notched over five wins each this year at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.

All Stars A is coming off a resounding victory. Last Saturday, the squad defeated Chelsea Alvaranga’s Unity side 52-12 with Tashena Parks steadying the cause at Goal Shooter. With the win, the defending national champions are 7-0 atop the A division.

According to the latest association statistics, the A unit has excelled on defence by allowing a league-low 74 points. Their offence has notched a modest 189 points with Pauline Bodden as the top scorer with 59 goals.

In the B division, the Cayman National Bank All Stars are in first place at 6-0. The most recent victory was arguably the landmark triumph of the season thus far, a 26-24 win over Supa Storm. Top scorer Karen Smith-James (147 goals on the year) led the way for the winners with 17 goals.

Both All Star teams face stiff competition. In the top flight, the Storm Radarz are 6-1 after crushing the Flames Strikers 61-24 last Saturday behind top scorer Kay Copeland (146 goals). Rising Stars sit third at 4-2 with the competition’s most prolific scorer Rosemarie Wilson (182 goals on the year).

With their recent defeats, Flames fall to 3-4 while Unity are 2-5. The Strikers have relied on top scorer Marsha Campbell while Unity feature Sheree McKenzie. The 1-5 Jets, with prodigy Charlotte Shepeard and Sue Nixon’s 0-6 Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Renegades round out the bottom clubs.

Supa Storm, 5-1, are second in the B ranks behind Melanie Lewis. Rising Stars B, behind Alexis Carias, improved to 5-2 with a 43-20 win last Saturday over the now 3-4 Optimists, who feature Milaney Dunn Garwood. After that comes 2-4 Ernst and Young Hot Shots with Gemma Butterfield, 1-5 Storm Chaserz with Shania Ebanks and 0-6 Island Heritage with Dominique Mowbray.

The next matches are on Thursday, 7 February, featuring the B ranks. At 6.45pm Island Heritage face Optimists while Hot Shots tackle Rising Stars. At 8pm, Chaserz challenge All Stars.

The first indoor games of the season are slated for this Saturday, 9 February, at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. Action starts from 5.40pm featuring the top sides in the A and B divisions.
