All Stars confident in title run

After an unbeaten start to the season, All Stars A have visions of a repeat title.

The reigning national champions sit atop the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2013 Open League. All Stars are 2-0 in the Championship group after posting a 7-0 record during the opening phase.

For team stalwart Pauline Bodden, current form points to more glory by May.

“We’re looking for another championship, everyone wants to come up hard against us,” Bodden said. “Not too many of the other teams like us. We’ve been together awhile now and I’m hoping the chemistry and experience takes us to another title.”

All Stars are next in action on Saturday, 23 February, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts. At 6.45pm, they face Marsha Campbell’s Flames Strikers, who are 0-2 in the Championship category after going 3-4 in the initial stage.

Defence has been a calling card for All Stars this season. After allowing a league-low 74 points initially, the side has so far allowed a division-low 50 points. The offence notched a modest 189 points in the beginning with Bodden as the top scorer with 59 goals.

Bodden said many players deserve credit for her squad’s defensive prowess.

“The defence has key players who work hard,” she said. “Our centre court is looking good and the whole team should get a good big up. Everyone is strong.

“Tashena Parks is usually the Wing Defence/Goal Defence, she’s tall and uses that height to her advantage,” Bodden added. “Tishelle Logan is not new to the sport, having just advanced to the A team from our B team, and she’s a real good player, too. On the B team, she was a Goal Attack/Goal Shooter and she’s young, strong and works wherever you put her.

“In general, we’re in the game,” she said. “We just got to take our time, settle and have confidence because we’ve only played a few games so far.”

Aside from Flames, All Stars have competition for this year’s crown from Kay Copeland’s 1-1 Storm Radarz, Marcia Moiten’s 1-0 Rising Stars A and Chelsea Alvaranga’s 0-1 Unity.

It should be noted that two games in the Plate group are scheduled for Saturday. At 6.45pm, Supa Storm face Rising Stars B, with Cayman National Bank All Stars B facing Jets at 8pm.
