Scholars rue chance to close gap

The top of the Premier League is as tight as ever following table toppers Bodden Town’s draw at home with reining champions Scholars International on Sunday.

Scholars had the better of the first half during chilly, blustery conditions. And just after the break they were rewarded with a penalty, which midfield predator Nahun Rodriguez tucked away for his 11th league goal this term.

Only BT’s Dwayne “Gaza” Wright and Elite’s Mark Ebanks have scored more goals – 12 apiece.

Tom Elliot and the rest of the Scholars defence gave “Gaza” little opportunity to shine. Bodden Town’s Yefrey Calderon makes a habit of scoring vital goals and this was no exception.

As the ball was pinging around the Scholars defence from a corner, Calderon lashed home in the 82nd minute for the 1-1 equaliser.

Perhaps Scholars were a bit weary after their epic Digicel Cup victory over Elite on Ash Wednesday, which went to penalties for a decision. But BT also had Ramon Sealy back in goal, who had returned from university.

Scholars are ruing squandered chances and not clearing when Caleron was prowling. But at least they are still in touch with BT, who lead the standings with 32 points from 13 games.

Scholars are third on 28, two points behind Elite Sports Club, who defeated George Town, 2-1. Mark Ebanks opened the scoring in the 13th minute, Ariel Tatum equalised during the 60th and Hank Parchment hit his seventh goal of the season in the 91st minute at the TE McField Annex.

The North Side-Cayman Athletic match at the TE McField Annex was postponed because so many Athletic players were in a tournament in Las Vegas.

In the earlier game at Bodden Town, Tigers drew 3-3 with Academy. Tigers scorers were Alfredo Challenger (47 minutes), Eric Brown (73) and Jamal White (85). Academy’s strikes came through Rico Brown (45 and 59) and Yannick Solomon (61).

This Sunday, matches at Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay include Academy against Bodden Town, at 5pm, and Elite versus Scholars.

At the TE McField Annex, George Town will play North Side in the early game and Tigers face Cayman Athletic in the 7pm start.
