The first motor sports event of the year is about to get under way.
The Cayman Motorsports Association is putting on its opening race of the 2013 Time Attack season. The Progressive Loop in George Town serves as host on Sunday, 24 February, from 1pm.
Event sponsor is Toyo Tires and autocross action is expected to follow last year’s format with head-to-head racing as two drivers compete against each other simultaneously. A slight change will exist with the driver groupings, as the All Wheel Drive category is being eliminated, leaving only the Street and Unlimited divisions.
Early focus will rest on last year’s winners in Jimel McLean, Alexander “AJ” Conolly and Keith “Speedy” Tibbetts III. McLean won the street and battle sections of the Two-Wheel Drive class in a Honda Civic. Conolly won the AWD division in his Mitsubishi Evolution VIII. Tibbetts III ran his Valvoline Subaru Impreza Sti to the overall Unlimited title.
Notable drivers from last year included Reynaldo Powery, who ran the Street section in a Nissan Primera and Tom Kirkconnell, who ran a Mazda RX-7 in the Unlimited group.
Mandatory registration for the upcoming meet is Friday, 22 February, at 7pm at Automotive Art. New racers can compete for free.
