Bodden Town are intent on winning the Premier League this season in memory of former player Gerome “Bird” Graham, who died tragically of an enlarged heart while training last summer.
Never favourites to do so ahead of champions Scholars International and Elite at the start of the season, it looks like a possibility now after Bodden Town opened up a four-point gap at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday.
They beat Academy 3-1 at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay to reach 35 points from 14 games. There are seven more rounds to play.
Bodden Town has lost only once all season and scored 43 times, with only 11 against.
Always fielding a promising team of youngsters, Bodden Town has suddenly matured and with the addition of Dwayne “Gaza” Wright and Alex Belcher from Elite, the team is a nice balance of youth and experience – a perfect mix for aspiring champions. In addition to that, Bodden Town players who were at university in the United States are starting to return. Tevon Levien and keeper Michael Gurzong are back from college.
Belcher hit two – in the 24th and 83rd minutes – and Wright got his 13th of the season in the 70th minute against Academy, whose goal came from Marc Brown in the 54th.
Elite lost ground, beaten 4-2 by Scholars in the match that followed. Paul Brown (16th) and Chris Douglas (41st) gave Scholars a halftime cushion.
Odain Plinton (52nd) got Scholars third. Mark Ebanks hit his 13th goal of the season in the 63rd minute for Elite before Douglas bagged his second in the 66th for Scholars, a minute before Hank Parchment fired in Elite’s second.
Elite were leapfrogged by Scholars for second place, but both are on 31 points.
George Town has the knack of creating opportunities, but rarely win by a large margin. Not on Sunday though. They thrashed North Side, 6-1, with two coming from central defender Leighton Elliott in the first minute and 34th.
Ariel Tatum (8th), Justin Pierre (61st), Kevin Moore (86th) and Raheem Robinson (87th) completed the rout. Floyd “Irons” McKenzie got North Side’s consolation in the 82nd.
In the second game, Jerronie McLean capitalised on Cayman Athletic’s extra possession late to fire in the winner in the 87th minute in their 1-0 victory over Tigers.
George Town are fourth in the league with 21 points, then Academy with 18 points. Cayman Athletic is sixth with 12 points, North Side seventh with seven points and Tigers eighth with two.
Premier League action this Sunday is between Tigers and George Town in the 5pm match at North Side before North Side take on Elite at 7pm.
At the TE McField Annex, Academy plays Scholars International in the early game and then it’s Cayman Athletic against Bodden Town.
