Charlotte will be a good Shepheard

Charlotte Shepheard intends to be a star in Cayman netball.

Shepheard is one of the prospective members of the national Under-21 team. She made it past the second roster cut with the last cuts expected to occur in the coming weeks.

Shepheard, who turns 21 this month, started playing netball at school in England at age six. She states fitness and patience go a long way in the sport.

“I love that it is a team sport and it’s a good way to meet new people and build friendships,” Shepheard said. “I enjoy being able to improve my fitness whilst playing a game I love.

“I have learnt I have to be patient with others and how to communicate with others on the court and off court.”

The Cayman Islands Netball Association has its top juniors preparing for the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland this August. The world championships, happening 22-31 August, take place every four years with the last event on the Cook Islands in 2009. Australia are the reigning champions and some 20 countries will be participating this year.

The girls have been training at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts since September. Tryouts initially attracted 25 players and all have been under the guidance of technical director for Cayman netball Gillian Lee.

In addition to training, Shepheard has had a major role with the Jets netball club, which takes part in the association’s 2013 open league. She said making the national team would be a huge honour.

“I love the Cayman Islands and to be able to represent a country I call home will be a great honour,” she said.
