As we enter the heart of the fray surrounding all things
politic and the 22 May general election, the Caymanian Compass will dedicate
each Tuesday and Thursday to relevant issues that face both the voters and the
candidates.
We begin this CompassPoint feature today by taking a
multifaceted look at cruise berthing.
It has for years been a contentious topic from those who are
adamant that we need cruise berthing to continue to lure cruise ship visitors,
to those who declare cruisers relish the tender experience in the Cayman
Islands.
In today’s offering we talked to stakeholders on all sides
of the issue; candidates, the politicians who have had this in their agendas
for years and the people the berthing decision affects the most – tourists.
We also talked to business owners on the waterfront. They
look at the issue pragmatically – do what’s best for putting money into the
territory’s coffers and their tills.
No matter your stance on berthing of cruise ships, it is and
will continue to be a political topic that will be tossed around in
electioneering debates, speeches and discussions. Take a look at what we have
to offer, beginning on Page 11, and let us know what you think.
You’ll find various ways to contact us on that page.
On Thursday, we turn our focus to education in the Cayman
Islands, which is an issue in every election.
There is a strategic plan on the table that takes a
long-range approach to preparing our students for the workforce and the future.
We will take a look at the history of public education in
the Cayman Islands and examine efforts to make improvements, from new schools
to plans to get parents involved more in their children’s education.
While we have a listing of issues for each of these
CompassPoint articles, we would like to know what you consider to be the top
issues in this election.
CompassPoint will be just one of the myriad avenues the
Caymanian Compass will take to help you make the best, most informed decision
you can at the polls when we go to elect our new government in May.
