Candidates have eight weeks to campaign
Next Wednesday, 27 March, is Nomination Day in the six electoral districts of the Cayman Islands.
It is the one and only day on which duly qualified candidates may be nominated to stand for election in the general election on 22 May.
Supervisor of Elections Kearney Gomez said the returning officer for each district will receive nominations starting at 8am and closing at 3pm. Proceedings in each district are open to the public.
If there are more individuals nominated than the district has seats in the Legislative Assembly, the returning officer is required to “cause election to be made” in that district on the day set for the general election.
Following are the venues for nomination and the number of seats the district will have in the 2013-2017 Legislative Assembly:
West Bay, John Gray Memorial Church Hall; four seats.
George Town, the Smith Road Centre lobby; six seats.
Bodden Town, James M. Bodden Civic Centre; four seats.
Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, District Administration Building conference room; two seats.
North Side, Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre; one seat.
East End, William Allen McLaughlin Civic Centre; one seat.
A candidate may be nominated in one district only. He or she need not live in that district, but the two people who sign the nomination paper must be registered voters of that district.
The candidate must sign the nomination paper to signify consent, and the person witnessing the signature must also sign.
At the close of nominations all returning officers, except for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, will meet at the Government Administration Building’s main conference room on the ground floor of the Elgin Avenue facility. The elections team, along with Governor Duncan Taylor and Deputy Governor Franz Manderson will be there from 3pm to 6pm, after which the ballot paper templates will be approved by Attorney General Sam Bulgin and sent to be printed.
As previously announced, the governor will issue two proclamations on Tuesday, 26 March – one dissolving parliament and one declaring a general election.
Cabinet ministers will continue in their posts until the elections. Candidates have eight weeks to campaign between Nomination Day and Election Day.
