Cayman’s art scene has a brand new space to show off its skills.
The Capstone Gallery is the brainchild of artist Orchid Morrison, who is opening up the Mary Street facility along with her brother and sister-in-law.
“The first event is an exhibition featuring my new collection,” explains Orchid. “But after that we plan to do new artists regularly on constant rotation, similar to what they do at Full of Beans. It’s the only art gallery that is centrally-located.” She said that a gap in the market had been identified for a gallery situated in George Town.
“We do get a lot of tourist traffic. We felt we could offer a flavour of local artwork to whilst they are strolling around the capital. It was a business idea we all came up with,” said the artist, who has been visible in the Cayman Islands for some time and previously had shows on in the likes of Casanova’s.
This represents the next step up for the YCLA finalist, she tells us.
The opening is on Friday, 19 April from 6 to 9pm. There will be an hour of free champagne from 6 to 7pm, which sounds good to us.
“We will also have Cayman carrot cake there,” says Orchid, if any further incentive were indeed needed.
