Optimists look to cool off Hot Shots for championship

The Optimists are one win away from netball glory.

The Cayman Islands Netball Association is staging the Division Three final for its 2013 Open League. On Thursday, 25 April, Optimists battle the Ernst and Young Hot Shots at 8pm at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.

Optimists and Hot Shots, both 4-1-1, come into Thursday’s clash after convincing semifinal victories last week. Optimists crushed 1-5 Island Heritage, 35-15, thanks to strong shooting from attacking players Milaney Dunn Garwood, Nekita Saintvil and Charmaine Watson. Megan Anderson was Island Heritage’s most prominent shooter this season with 32 goals.

Ernst and Young thrashed 2-4 Storm Chaserz, 31-10. The Hot Shots offence was rolling behind Goal Shooter Gemma Butterfield, Goal Attack Kate MacPherson and Wing Attack Roz Glanfield. Chaserz struggled without Haley D’Hue supporting Leandra Ramoon in attack.

Four of the Championship Division teams are also in action on Thursday. At 6.45pm, 4-3 Rising Stars A battle 7-0 All Stars A, while 1-6 Unity face 5-2 Storm Radarz.

The league’s regular season finale takes place this Saturday, 27 April, at 6.45pm. The Plate Division is in action as 3-1-3 Rising Stars B tackle 1-6 Jets, with 5-1-1 Supa Storm challenging 1-6 Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Renegades. Storm, behind star shooter Olivia Samuels, will be the No. 2 seed for the playoffs behind 7-1 Cayman National Bank All Stars B.

League playoffs begin 2 May with the national finals taking place at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre on 11 May.
