Builders making a run

The Burger King Coed Flag Football League playoffs get under way this Friday with much of the focus on a pair of perennial contending teams.

National Building Society, 5-1-0, and Wok-n-Roll, 5-1, have controlled the A and B divisions, respectively, all season under the lights at the Ed Bush Sports Centre in West Bay. A plethora of notable talents have steadied both sides throughout.

Brendon Malice, Christina Hefner, Jon Carter and Alicia Dixon all suit up for the Building Society while Phil Brown, Adrean Russell, Antoinette Lewis and Alexandria Saintvil guide Wok-n-Roll.

The Building Society would finish ahead of Maples, 4-1-1, Burger Shack, 4-2, and the Wolverines, 4-2. Wok-n-Roll, meanwhile, topped 4-2 Mourant Ozannes, 4-2 Cayman Auto Diagnostic and 3-3 Kirk Freeport.

Statistically, A division overall leaders were headed by quarterback Kevin Solomon of Burger Shack with 16 passing touchdowns. Teammate Perry Levy led all receivers with eight TD receptions. Brendon Malice of Building Society led all runners with two TDs and defensively, Josh Parsons of Wolverines led with two interceptions returned for TDs.

For the women, Jessica Ebanks of Wolverines led the group with eight TD passes, while Cassandra Bodden of Burger Shack topped receivers with four TD receptions. Joanne Remillard of Duke’s led on the ground and Meghan Boccaccio of Go Flag Yourself! led defensive players with three INTs.

In the B division, Jamie Stephen of Lone Star led the way with 14 TD passes and teammate Jon Pump led all receivers with seven TD receptions. Brad Conolly of Mourant and Jason Wong led all rushers with three TDs apiece and Andy Buergo of Lone Star led on defence with three INTs, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

For the women, Jessica Pawlik of Cayman Auto led all passers with 14 TDs and Betsy Smith of Burger King led all receivers with three TD receptions. Meanwhile, Shawanna Hera of Mourant controlled the ground with two TDs and Alexandria Saintvil led in defensive points.

Game action continued last weekend with Maples first knocking off Burger Shack, 19-14, behind the prowess of David Taylor. Selkirk Watler and Scimone Campbell propelled Go Flag Yourself! over Grape Tree Cafe, 18-12. The Wolverines shellacked Queensgate, 50-0, behind Jessica Ebanks and Cayman Auto clobbered Weststar, 42-13, under the guidance of Jessica Pawlik.

Gary Rutty and Ryan Smith of Burger King stunned Kirk Freeport, 27-22. Rutty and Ebanks notched player of the week honours.

It should be noted that this Friday will see the semifinals and finals taking place. Semifinal games will feature Wok-n-Roll versus Kirk Freeport and Mourant versus Cayman Auto at 6pm. Those games will be followed by Maples versus Burger Shack and the Building Society versus Wolverines at 7pm. The finals will start immediately after the conclusion of those games.

Each division winner will claim championship honours, inclusive of a $150 tab at a local venue. The most outstanding male and female performer from each division will also be recognised.
