Five months ago, KPMG A fell short of championship glory to Home Gas.
Now the accountants will look to avoid history repeating itself. The squads square off for the A division title in the Cayman Islands Little League Association’s 2013 Winter Adult Co-Ed Softball League on Tuesday, 30 April. The Field of Dreams facility in George Town hosts the contest at 8.15pm on field four.
Home Gas have the most bragging rights, with 11 national championships and a 7-4-1 regular season record that was good enough for second in the regular season. While the numbers pale in comparison to 2012, when the reigning champs were a competition-best 11-1 scoring 186 runs while allowing 82 runs, Peter Whittaker and company remain a veteran unit.
KPMG A, behind talents like Vaughn Smith, had a third place finish this season at 7-5 but scored the most runs in their division with 187. Those numbers represent an improvement for captain Doug Harrell and his troops, as they had a 6-6 regular season mark in 2012 while scoring 123 runs and allowing the same amount.
It should be noted that KPMG beat Home Gas during this season’s round robin playoffs, 17-14, in mid-April. The accountants went on to lose to the 5-7 A.L. Thompson’s Hammers, 17-26, before defeating the regular season winners, 8-3-1 Rhino Rebar, 10-7. Home Gas would beat Rhino Rebar, 13-1, before crushing the Hammers 21-7.
The top flight is the first group to stage a championship game. The B division will crown a winner on 9 May, the C division title game is on 7 May and the D ranks wrap up on 13 May.
Postseason games continue this week starting on Monday, 29 April. The D league playoffs begin with the Digicel Dynamos, the top seed at 7-4-1, battling the 3-9 PwC Scorpions at 8.15pm on field two.
