Fire breaks out during prison lockdown

Cayman Islands prison service officials dealt with a minor fire set by a remand inmate at Her Majesty’s Prison Northward Friday night.

Just before midnight, officials said an inmate housed in the High Risk Unit set fire to his clothes in the cell.

Prison staff responded to the incident, extinguished the fire and released the smoke.

As a result, some inmates in the unit were escorted to the Cayman Islands Hospital and treated for minor effects of smoke inhalation. They were later returned to Northward.
