The ongoing ace presentation of movies at the National Gallery continues with the powerful Midnight Cowboy.
The 1969 movie is based on the 1965 novel of the same name by James Leo Herlihy. It was written by Waldo Salt, directed by John Schlesinger, and stars Jon Voight, in his film debut, in the title role alongside Dustin Hoffman.
Its no-holds-barred themes of streetlife, prostitution and desperation delivered masterfully by a tautly-directed cast were one of the reasons this movie was a triple Oscar-winner and to date it is the only X-Rated (adults only) picture to ever receive an Academy Award.
This continues the National Gallery’s series of Oscar-winning movies from 1950 to 1975.
The movie begins at 7pm and there’s a suggested donation of $5 per adult for refreshments.
