Kids doubled up in unique battle for court props

Cayman’s top junior tennis players paired up to compete in the first of a series of doubles tournaments hosted by the Cayman Islands Tennis Club.

Last Sunday 24 players, in two age groups, braved the midday heat at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club in South Sound to compete for the title, prizes and ranking points.

Callum Theaker and Bobby Lomax claimed the Under-18 title, beating Daniel Reid and Jade Wilkinson in the final.

Jona Narborough and John-Ross Clough claimed the U-12 trophy after beating William Priaulx and Jack Lomax in a hard fought final.

Playing in her first tournament, Vanessa Fullerton teamed up with Shmritee Arun to compete in the U-12 division. They deserve praise for managing some hard fought wins over far more experienced teams.

Dale Avery, tennis club coach and tournament organiser, was impressed with the turn-out and quality of play.

“For having little doubles experience, the level of play was very high” said Avery. “It is essential for players who look to further their tennis to be competent doubles players.”

The next tournament will in October at the tennis club and all interested players on the Island are encouraged to participate.
