Cayman’s fittest athletes are not really taking a break for the summer.
For some, it’s the Island Games in Bermuda starting this weekend, while others are preparing to do herculean events later in the year, particularly the Cayman Islands Triathlon in November.
Triathlete Johan Heath is competing in the Olympic distance triathlon on 14 July at the Island Games. Forty-five triathletes from various islands will compete.
The weekend of 10 and 11 August, Heath will compete in the Olympic distance during the US National Age Group Championships in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“I qualified for this national age group championship by placing in the top 10 per cent of the male 30 to 34 age group at Ironman 70.3 Miami last October,” said an excited Heath, who hopes to dethrone fellow South African Marius Acker as Cayman’s top triathlete.
Sea swim veteran Victor Thompson is off to the Island Games, too, only not as a competitor but as the team’s manager.
Thompson will be juggling 112 people in 10 different sports. His next swim is on 14 September in the Foster’s Food Fair 800 metres.
Champion triathlete Pam Abbott participated in the PACCE walk/run organised by the Lions Club last week when they ran 15 miles during each of the three days. She is now training for the Chicago Marathon in October.
Larry Walters just keeps chugging along. The recently-married triathlete still maintains an impressive training schedule, although he will be 67 next month.
“I enjoy a long crank of around 58 miles on Sunday mornings on my road bike, starting at 6am from Wendy’s on the West Bay Road,” Walters said. “I join a small group called the Seven Mile Beach Swim Club at 6.15am on Tuesdays and Thursday at Cayman Reef.
“They elected me their leader, as I occasionally contribute coffee. On Friday evenings, I meet the likes of Celine Macken at Sunset House to swim and unwind.
“I stay to hydrate, while Celine often departs to rest. I meet Ed ‘Solly’ Solomon for a deep water run, which is great for recovering knees at Royal Palms at 6.30am on Saturdays, followed by a 9am abs class at World Gym, and then 45 minutes of upper body work.
“I rest Saturday and Sunday afternoon. My new wife, Debbie, is herself a progressing athlete, she feeds me well. I have lost eight pounds of baby fat in the last three months. Life is good.
