Watts renews long slog to big race

The Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon and Four-Person Relay is only a few months away and one local fitness center has started a program to help both novice and veteran runners train for the events.

For the big race on Sunday Dec. 1, Tony’s Running Club will meet at Fitness Connection in South Sound every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 5:30 a.m., starting on Sept. 3 and finishing on Thursday, Nov. 28.

“This 14-week training program is for those participating in the full marathon, half-marathon or team relay, as well as those who may just want to join a group to keep motivated,” said Tony Chisholm, who is conducting the program, said, “I’ll be providing running schedules, team training before each run and tips on technique. There will be something for everyone and beginners are welcome.”

The cost for the 27 sessions is $299, which breaks down to around $11 per class. Chisholm has been a personal trainer for more than 25 years.

Tony’s Running Club is perfect for anyone wanting encouragement to start running, as well as elite runners seeking to improve their personal best.

“We are so happy to hear that Fitness Connection is offering a running program again this year to give guidance and support to people who are interested in participating in the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon,” said Rhonda Kelly, race director.

“There are so many people who are unsure about how to train, whether they are doing it right or doing enough, and then there are those who might not have the support system and need some motivation.

“A program like this is a great way to meet new people, learn some useful training tips and prepare both mentally and physically for the event.

“I encourage everyone, especially novice runners, to sign up for this program and expect great results on race day.”

Kelly also encourages other fitness centers to consider offering their own courses and to contact the Cayman Islands Marathon office with that information.

“We are happy to get the word out about any fitness and training programs out there that will benefit our runners and help them have a safer, more satisfactory race experience.”
