A 23-year-old man was arrested Tuesday following a police chase after officers said he stole a vehicle at gunpoint in George Town.
Just before 6 p.m., police received a report that a Honda Civic had been stolen near the Red Cross building on Huldah Avenue.
The suspect, who was known to the theft victim, sped off in the Honda. The car was spotted a short time later by police patrols and a vehicle pursuit began. Armed units and the police helicopter assisted.
The stolen Civic traveled at speeds of around 60 to 80 miles per hour along Shamrock Road, weaving in and out of traffic, according to police. Eventually, the RCIPS incident manager decided to stand down the pursuit.
The police helicopter crew maintained observations as the car continued into the Midland Acres area of Bodden Town, where the car swerved off the road and the suspect ran into a nearby yard. The helicopter crew guided officers to the suspect’s hiding place and he was arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
