Weekend of rum, riddims and belly laughs

It’s only a few weeks until Pirates Week is upon us, when swashbuckling pirates and their wenches will be swarming through George Town, parrots and booty in hand, to celebrate Cayman’s National Festival in style. Well before November rolls around, however, the Pirates Week Office has two great events in store.

Pirates Week organizers plan to run a series of fundraising events throughout the year to boost funding for the festivities. Two events this year are scheduled for the last weekend in September and are open to all.

Rum n’ Riddims

The first Rum n’ Riddims, destined to become a fixture on Cayman’s annual events calendar, is set for Sept. 28. A rum tasting reception and a concert featuring some of Cayman’s best bands, the combined event promises to be a lively and colorful evening.

Sponsored by the Cayman Spirits Company on the grounds of Pedro St. James, the rum will be flowing freely during the reception when attendees sample two locally distilled rums, Governors Reserve and Seven Fathoms. All manner of rum cocktails will be on offer, along with free hors d’oeuvres.

Gates will open at 7 p.m., and the concert begins at 8 p.m. Michael Lemay’s Steel Band will provide music during the reception. The concert will kick off with Cayman Swing Kings, a 15-piece jazz band. The lineup also includes Andy Blake, Local Motion, Suite Elite and Swanky Kitchen Band.

Bang-Belly Hotel

On Sept. 29, theater lovers will be in for a treat when popular Jamaican actor Keith “Shebada” Ramsay and a colorful cast of characters bring their latest production, Bang-Belly Hotel, to Cayman. They will perform one night only at the Lion’s Center.

The play, which is produced by the well-known theater company Stages Production, promises plenty of belly laughs as the cast, which includes Christopher Daley, Michael Nicholson, Deon Silvera and Garfield Reid, romp and dance their way through the script.

Tickets for either event may be purchased from the following
outlets: Foster’s Food Fair (Airport), Funky Tangs, Reflections
and Singh’s Roti Shop.
Rum n Riddims is $40. Bang-Belly Hotel is $25 in advance or $30
at the gate. For more information on Pirates Week fundraisers and other Pirates Week activities,
