Man released in homicide inquiry

One of the two men arrested this week in connection with the killing of Earl Hart in Prospect has been released by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

RCIPS officials said the 31-year-old male was released outright, meaning without bail conditions, in connection with the police inquiry.

A second man who was arrested remained in police custody on Friday.

Mr. Hart was shot inside his apartment in Prospect on Oct. 3.

The men arrested, a 21-year-old in Savannah and a 31-year-old in Bodden Town, were taken by police in the predawn hours of Wednesday. Neither man has been charged in connection with the case.

According to police, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 multiple shots were fired into an apartment on Marina Drive where Mr. Hart stayed.

Mr. Hart was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead early Friday morning, Oct 4.

According to court records, Earl Hart testified in the murder trial of Chakane “C.J.” Scott after Scott was accused in the shooting death of Asher McGaw in East End in September 2011. Scott was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012.

Royal Cayman Islands Police officers investigating Mr. Hart’s killing did not state any potential motive for the incident, but indicated the previous court testimony had nothing to do with it.
