The two Cayman boxers at the world championships in Kazakhstan showed typical heart and application, but went out at their first attempt.
Kendall Ebanks lost by three points in a unanimous decision against Hungarian Andras Vadasz, while Tafari Ebanks lost against Mexican Brian Gonzales by one point.
Tafari was fighting a more experienced boxer and as a result has received recognition from the Amateur International Boxing Association as one to watch.
Gonzales said of Tafari, “He was a tough opponent, but, of course, as it’s the world championships, everyone here is tough.”
Leyla Jackson of the Cayman Islands Boxing Association said, “We are extremely proud of the progress that our national team has made over the last 18 months, which is evidenced by them starting to gain international recognition on the world stage.”
