Police arrest 34-year-old suspect
Police were involved in a high-speed car chase through George Town district during lunchtime Tuesday, eventually arresting a suspect in the Swamp area.
Officers cornered the 34-year-old male suspect after the chase through the district. During the pursuit, three police vehicles and four private vehicles were damaged, police said.
As officers chased him, the suspect ditched his vehicle in the Watler’s Road area before commandeering another car at Delworth’s gas station on North Church Street.
When he also abandoned the second car and fled on foot, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service surrounded the area in Swamp with police dogs and officers and went house to house in search of the man. He was arrested shortly before 1:30 p.m.
The police helicopter was also involved in the search and was considered instrumental in assisting with locating and capturing the suspect, police said.
The suspect was in custody Tuesday afternoon as investigations continued. He was being held on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving. Police said they also had a warrant for the suspect for failing to appear in court.
This is the second high-profile chase to occur in George Town in a week. On New Year’s Day, robbers held up the Diamonds International jewelery store in downtown George Town.
They were chased down by Police Commissioner David Baines, who used his car to prevent the getaway vehicle from leaving a car park next door to the store and then apprehended the suspects. Local shopkeepers and bus and taxi drivers assisted in catching and detaining those suspects.
