Budding Crosbys hit the street

Street hockey returns to the local sports scene.

The Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club is hosting its fourth annual 4-on-4 street hockey tournament Saturday, Jan. 25. Action takes place beside the Arts and Recreation Center at Cayman International School from around 9 a.m. through most of the day.

This tournament is designed to help grow the sport of youth roller hockey in Cayman and more importantly, raise funds for Feed our Future, this year’s chosen charity. In 2014, 50 percent of the proceeds raised will be donated directly to Feed our Future Cayman, whose mission is to feed children in need with school meals.

The other 50 percent will be injected back into youth hockey with the hopes of further developing the program and getting more kids participating in the sport. Over the past three years, the tournament has raised more than $25,000 for local charities, including Cayman HospiceCare, UNICEF Cayman Kids and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. The club expects to raise more funds this year through additional sponsorship and increased registrants.
