League kicks in with full schedule

The Premier League returned to action in earnest this week with matches on Sunday, midweek and more this weekend.

Carson Fagan scored a hat-trick for Scholars International as they beat Academy 4-2. Ziecko Herrera got the other Scholars goal and Academy’s marksmen were Yannick Solomon and Ernie Jacques.

Theron Wood took his goals tally for the season to 11, hitting a brace for Bodden Town as they beat North Side 3-0.

Sunset are doing well on their return to the top flight, defeating Cayman Athletic 3-0 thanks to strikes by Kevin Guirey, David O’Connell and Justin Pierre.

Dwayne “Gaza” Wright took his scoring record to nine for Elite but they lost to table toppers George Town 2-1. Miguel Simms and Ariel Tatum were the George Town scorers.

Gaza has been the league’s top scorer for the past three seasons and normally at this stage of the campaign he is way in front, so it could all go down to the final games for the Golden Boot.

Matches were played on Wednesday and Thursday night and the next round of games are on Sunday.

At the TE McField Annex, George Town play Sunset at 5 p.m. before Academy face North Side at 7 p.m.

At the Ed Bush stadium in West Bay, the early kickoff is Cayman Athletic against Bodden Town and the biggest match of the weekend, Elite against Scholars International.

In the Foster’s First Division, Roma remain ahead of Cayman Brac after the predominantly Jamaican ex-pat team beat Latinos 6-2. Roma’s scorers were Gabre Dickens (2) and Craig Carradice, Gavin Reynolds, Steve Dunkley and Errol Ricketts. Fermin Chavez and German Flores got the Latino goals. Jesus Nunez Torres got the Tigers goal in their 1-0 victory over Future.

East End beat Cayman Brac 3-2, coming back well from a two goals deficit. Stephen Tatum and Nicholas Connor opened the scoring for Brac before Andrew Browning, Kristopher Pearson and Rodrick Pearson scored for East End.

The next First Division fixtures are on Feb. 8. At the TE McField Annex, Roma face Future at 6 p.m. and then Tigers face East End at 8 p.m. Cayman Brac are at home to Latinos at 8 p.m.

Craig Carridice, Gavin Reynolds and East End’s Rico Bodden are the First Division’s top marksmen with five goals.

German Flores, Michael Martin, Stephen Tatum and Steve Wellington have all scored three.

The women played in the President’s Cup semifinals first leg on Saturday. Scholars International drew 0-0 with Sunset and Future beat Elite 1-0 thanks to a strike by Shenel Gall.

The women’s second leg in the President’s Cup is on Feb. 22 at Ed Bush. Elite play Future at 6 p.m. then Sunset face Scholars at 8 p.m.
