Landfill fire extinguished on 4th day

The Cayman Islands Fire Service has confirmed a landfill fire that began early Wednesday was entirely extinguished around mid-day Saturday.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Rosworth McLaughlin told the Caymanian Compass Saturday afternoon that flames were out by 12:04 p.m. Saturday at the George Town dump, about 78 hours after the blaze was first noticed on top of a residential trash pile at the landfill.

Mr. McLaughlin said fire crews would remain on scene until Saturday evening, just to make sure there were no flare ups, as can sometimes occur with landfill fires.
