CrossFit chases down Impressions

The Burger King Coed Flag Football League continues Friday with a number of quality games on schedule.

In the A division, Impressions Beauty Salon will put their unblemished record on the line against CrossFit7Mile, who are coming off a lopsided victory and looking for a statement game. The teams are led by Chris Lucas (Impressions) and Jamie Stephen (CrossFit7Mile), who are coming off MVP and MVP runner-up campaigns in the coveted summer premier league.

Veteran standouts Jon Pump, Todd Hazlewood, Schmarrah McCarthy, Taj Haye and Gillian Roffey will also square off in this key match-up. While the spread currently has CrossFit7Mile as 3-point underdogs, no one would be shocked if the final result nullifies the odds. In any case, a loss wouldn’t ruin either team’s playoff chances, whereas a win would cement a contender’s distinction.

In the B division, headlines continue to revolve around the Brad Conolly-led Higgs and Johnson (formerly team Mourant Ozannes), who have propelled themselves atop the power rankings by easily dismantling their first two opponents. They have an interesting match-up this week against an erratic Kirk Freeport team who, coming into the season, had viable title aspirations. Unfortunately, their offensive unit has yet to show up this season, scoring a combined 12 points in two games.

While on any given day a team can be beaten, it goes without saying that an offensive outpouring will be essential if the jewelers want to pull off the upset. An appearance by the versatile and fiery Daniel Kirkconnell, who has been missing in action thus far, would certainly help their case.

Though most of the attention will be on those two games, there is some intrigue surrounding the Maples versus WestStar matchup. Garnering little attention with their modest personnel, both teams are surprisingly unbeaten with contrasting styles of play. Constructed by local sports enthusiast Shawn Pitterson, Maples barrage their opponents with a dynamic big play offense propelled by the youthful Fabio Gall and Rubert Whittaker. WestStar sedates their opponents with a judicious ball control offense and timely defense led by Jessica Ebanks and Kevin Morales.

It’s early in the season, but a win by either team would instill internal belief that they belong in the “playoff” team conversation. The loser, on the other hand, may walk away questioning whether their early success was more a result of the quality of opponent faced.

Other noteworthy games include KPMG versus Burger King squad and Wok-N-Roll versus Los Terroristas, all of whom are looking to notch their first win of the season. There will also be a good night capper between Pizza Hut and Cronies, where the winner will go above 0.500.

To round up last week’s action, Barrett Edri and A division powerhouse Burger Shack knocked off Los Terroristas 26-7, CrossFit7Mile shellacked Duke’s 32-7, the Cronies cruised by Michael Carey and Go Flag Yourself! 39-13, and Impressions Beauty Salon endured Pizza Hut 19-13. In the B division, Ernesto Ebanks and the Ospreys overran Burger King 44-22, Cayman Auto Diagnostics dominated WakeBoard Cayman 37-14, WestStar shocked Chris Kirkconnell and Kirk Freeport 13-6, and Higgs and Johnson rocked KPMG 27-8.

Jarryd Bodden of the Ospreys and Jordana Clarke of the Cronies were recognized as the Men’s and Women’s players of the week. Games are played every Friday from 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the Ed Bush field in West Bay. The Security Centre Youth League is also currently in full swing with games every Saturday at the Camana Bay Sports Field between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
