Update 11 a.m. Tuesday: According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the 33-year-old American man who was arrested for being drunk and disorderly on a Delta Airlines flight that was forced to stop in Cayman Sunday has been charged with two offences under the Air Navigation Order of 2001
Those offenses include being drunk in an aircraft and acting in a disruptive manner. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
Initial story: A pair of newlyweds spent the first night of their honeymoon apart after a row at 30,000 feet above sea level ended with the drunken husband in a Grand Cayman jail cell and his wife headed for Costa Rica.
The flight, from Atlanta, made an unscheduled stop to dump the rowdy 33-year-old in Cayman before heading on to the Central American paradise with the other 168 passengers, including his wife, on board.
The crew of the Delta 901 asked to make an emergency landing at Owen Roberts International Airport at around 7 p.m. on Sunday. The couple had apparently been arguing and the man was described as behaving in an “unruly” way towards crew and other passengers.
He was arrested on suspicion of drunk and disorderly behavior and is expected to appear in court this week to face charges.
His wife meanwhile would have arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica, at 9.38 p.m. on Sunday when the Boeing 757 jet finally touched down at its destination.
Chief Inspector Raymond Christian, of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, confirmed, “Delta airline flight 901 left Atlanta, USA, yesterday evening destined to Costa Rica with 169 souls on board. Its captain had to divert the flight to Owen Roberts International Airport because of a male passenger behaving unruly to crew members and other passengers on board.
“The plane landed just after 7 p.m. without any incident; however, RCIPS officers arrested a 33-year-old passenger for drunk and disorderly behavior and he is in police custody pending further inquiries. “Subsequently, the flight continued on to its destination.”
