Women’s rugby action resumed with round 2 of the Elite Marble & Granite Women’s 7s league at the club ground in South Sound.
In the first game on Saturday, the Kirk Freeport All Diamonds took on the John Doak Architecture Lady Iguanas. The Iguanas’ ranks were bolstered with national team player Katy Bayles being on island for the weekend, but they were still missing Biannca Johnson, who was unavailable.
The All Diamonds got to work straight from the kickoff, controlling possession and working the phases into Iguana territory.
Some fine build-up play by Cara Colgan set up Laura Willighan who produced the day’s first score and also added the extras.
The Lady Iguanas responded straight away with a very good drive of their own, which was capped off by a mazy run by captain Jo Ziegler who set up a Bayles try between the posts. Bayles added the conversion to tie the game.
As half time approached, Shenel Gall found a gap and raced through it for a breakaway try which she duly converted.
The second half was a closely fought affair, but Larissa Johnson got the Lady Iguanas level when she scored a try which Bayles converted. The game looked to be heading for a draw when Laura Willigan breached the Lady Iguana defense and raced 30 yards for the score for an All Diamonds 19-14 victory.
Then the All Diamonds played again, against the OMNI Sharks. The All Diamonds started how they left off in the previous game with good organization and support play resulting in an extended period of possession.
However, the Sharks drew first blood with the round’s standout performer Marline Williams getting on the score sheet with a well worked try.
This was followed by a textbook Gall score under the posts. The game continued to be a close-fought affair in the second half until Cassianne Lawrence, with another impressive performance, scored on a breakaway with the extras being added by Gall. The OMNI Sharks coasted to a 17-0 victory.
The day’s final game saw the Lady Iguanas take on the OMNI Sharks whom they had beaten in round 1.
The Iguanas started fast and scored a great try when Bayles threw a fine dummy, then cut inside to wrong foot her defender and dive in for the score.
The Sharks responded immediately with a spectacular run by Tracey Seymour, who crashed through three tackles before spinning a pass to Jenna Richards, who scored between the posts.
The first half had been extremely close, but the Sharks took control in the second half, thanks to some standout play by Williams.
Straight from the kickoff, a fine move involving most of the Sharks players was rounded off with a 20 yard breakaway dash by Williams.
Lawrence then scored one. The Lady Iguanas responded with Colgan scoring. But, the play of the day would round out the days play when Williams crashed through two tackles and ran the length of the field to score her day’s third try, capping off an excellent performance.
So, the OMNI Sharks take the lead going into round 3, closely followed by the Kirk Freeport All Diamonds.
