Youth league flags more support for gridiron battles

Youth flag football in the Cayman Islands intends to move forward with new leadership.

The Cayman Islands Flag Football Association recently commissioned an executive board to run the national junior competition for the first time.

Chairman Kyle Broadhurst, who has been the chief figure for many years, now has four assistants: vice president Brendon Malice, treasurer Sherene Jackson, social coordinator Agueda Blake and logistics coordinator Dean Claassens.

All played a huge part in the staging of The Security Centre Ltd. 2014 Youth Flag Football League, which wrapped up play last month. The competition, which has completed six seasons, had 180 boys and girls playing at the Camana Bay Sports Field across the three divisions: junior (ages 7-9), middle (10-13) and senior (14-17).

The postseason saw a number of notable finishes. In the Junior division, the number one seed Maples Raiders beat the number four Burger King Gators to reach the title game. There they would take on the three seed Broadhurst Buccaneers, who upset No. 2 Fruta Kool Kidz in the semifinals. In the championship game, in spite of Broadhurst being ahead at half time, Maples fought back and won the game. The Raiders featured two touchdown runs by Jaden Reed and good defense by Keon Jennings.

In the middle division, the first round saw top seed UBS Eagles make quick work of No. 4 SRS Steelers while No. 2 Conyers Colts defeated third seed Walkers Wolverines. UBS lived up to their top billing by shutting down the Colts offense to win, 18-0, in their first season. UBS running back Janasi McLean had two TDs, wide receiver Alton Forest had one TD and quarterback Kalie Broderick threw a long TD pass to McLean. The defense relied on big plays from Broderick, Leroy Malcolm, Jamal Bodden and Andrew Bush.

In the senior division playoffs, the top seed Popeyes Saints hung on to beat No. 4 Al la Kebab Titans by one point while third seed Dart Cayman Islands Dolphins defeated No. 2 The Security Centre Packers. In the championship game, it came down to the final play of the game when Popeyes managed to score in the dying seconds to emerge champions.
