Maples and HSBC face elimination

A quartet of squads are fighting for their playoff lives on the diamond.

The Cayman Islands Little League Association is finishing its third week of postseason drama in the 2014 Winter Adult Coed Softball League. The Field of Dreams hosts a triple-header May 15 as HSBC challenge NCB Crushers at 6:30 p.m. on field four before Delphi Geeks tackle Maples Sluggers on field three and CNB battles KPMG A on field four at 8:15 p.m.

HSBC, in spite of talents like Wayne Griffith, lost its first playoff contest to the UBS Swingers, 16-3, last week. Rob Duty and NCB were upset by Walkers, 13-12. Due to the double-elimination format, Thursday’s game is a survive-and-advance scenario: The winner advances to the next match while the loser is knocked out of the postseason. It’s a similarly intense situation for the Geeks and Sluggers. Terry Ballard and Delphi lost the playoff opener to Deloitte, 18-17, while Marline Williams and Maples were defeated by the Coors Light Chuggers, 15-5.

CNB and KPMG are playing for a berth in the A division finals against the Tower Titans. Both sides have gone 1-1 so far with Robbie Cribb and CNB beating Rhino Rebar, 14-13, after losing to Doug Harrell and KPMG, 5-4, while the accountants lost to Tower, 15-7.
