Abbott circuits faster than rivals

Steve Abbott won the second of the May Classics cycle races, the Cost U Less Circuit, to add to his third place the week before in the time trials.

Sunday’s ride from Governor’s Square consisted of a one-hour race followed by three sprint laps on the 1.37 mile course. In the first hour, everybody rides together and only really races when a spontaneous “prime” is signalled by the organizers.

That’s when they race flat out for that lap and the winner gets a small prize. There were three primes in this race.

The route started at Lime Tree Bay Ave, went on to the Esterley Tibbetts Highway, around the Public Beach roundabout and back.

Abbott won in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 16.76 seconds – 5.44 seconds ahead of Michele “Mitch” Smith with Garfield Smith third in 1:11:22.43, who was fractionally ahead of Marius Deysel (1:11:22.67). Smith was also the fastest master.

Risa Golberg (1:11:29.38) was the fastest female, tenth overall and second female finisher was Carien Roberts-Harcombe (1:13:53.15) who was 17th overall. Ceretta Harvey was third female finisher.

The next classic is this Sunday, the 58 Mile Road Race from Clifton Hunter High School in Frank Sound. It is a three loop course to Seaview Road, East End, onto the Queen’s Highway and back to the school.
