Panthers start their title defense

Adult flag football is back on the local sports scene.

The Cayman Islands Flag Football Association launches its annual summer league on June 21. The Ed Bush field in West Bay plays host to seven matches over the course of about six hours. The ladies start first at 11 a.m. as the Wolverines battle the B’zzz while Zulu challenge Star Athletic. On the men’s side, the Panthers face KPMG at noon before the Predators challenge Lone Star at 1:15 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m., the Lynx play the Killa-Panthers while the Scorpions tackle the Sharks. At 3:30 p.m., Maples contend with Hellcats. Cox has a bye week on the men’s side.

Early focus is on both Panthers teams, who won their first championships last year. The Killa-Panthers relied on the likes of Alicia Dixon while the Panthers turned to veterans like Ryan Smith. To repeat, the ladies will have to stave off the seven other clubs while the men are looking to outdo the six other sides.

League games will take place every Saturday in West Bay over the next 14 weeks. The regular season finale is slated to be on Sept. 20 with the playoffs on Sept. 27 and the finals on Oct. 4.
