Radio show host in court

The host of Cayman’s morning political talk show “Crosstalk” on Rooster FM appeared in court Tuesday, charged with common assault and damage to property.

Austin Harris, 41, who was represented by defense attorney Lloyd Samson, had his bail extended and the matter reset to July 22, at which time Mr. Samson said his client intended to “enter pleas on that occasion.” He did not specify what kind of plea Mr. Harris intended to enter.

The charges against Mr. Harris were in connection with a domestic dispute that occurred in March 2014.

According to a statement from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, “A 41-year-old male from George Town was formally charged … with offenses of common assault and damage to property. The offenses occurred at an address at Governors Harbour on March 9.”

Although the release did not identify Mr. Harris by name, the talk show host later confirmed to the Cayman Compass that it was he who had been charged.

Mr. Harris made no comments relative to the pending court case Tuesday morning.

The talk show host is still appearing on Rooster FM station’s morning talk-back program and station owner Randy Merren has recently said he is backing the longtime host in his continued presence on the morning-drive talk show.
