Aspiring actors stage ‘Ti-Jean and His Brothers’

Students of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation’s Butterfield Young at Arts summer camp are set to showcase their new and improved acting and stage management skills with four performances of “Ti-Jean and His Brothers” at the Harquail Theatre, Aug. 8-10.

A powerful folk parable set in Haiti, “Ti-Jean and His Brothers” tells the story of a Caribbean family in crisis. The play, which explores the power of good versus evil and poor versus wealthy, is written by Nobel prize-winning St. Lucian poet laureate Derek Walcott.

The camp

The summer camp has been running for the past six weeks, offering students ages 11 to 17 the opportunity to immerse themselves in dance, voice, drama and music classes. The camp also included technical workshops on set design, lighting, sound and stage management by professional teachers and industry veterans.

The show will feature a cast of 12, with lead roles played by Vitoria Buttrum (Ti Jean), Alyssa McLaughlin (Mi Jean), Jacob Scott (Gros Jean), Jaedyn Hanna (Frog) and Katherine Erskine (multiple roles).

Tracie Watler of the CNCF said the play will appeal to anyone who appreciates Caribbean literature and poetic language.

“It is a classic folk tale from the region, which will appeal to families or older children.”

Tickets are $10 and are available from Funky Tangs and Foster’s Food Fair airport location. Show times are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 6 p.m.
