Health officials are recommending residents get the seasonal flu vaccine before this year’s flu season peaks.
The free shots are available by walk-in, from 2-4 p.m., Monday to Friday, starting Oct. 20, at the Cayman Islands Hospital and district health centers, and Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac, and by appointment at the Little Cayman clinic.
“We recommend that people get vaccinated as soon as possible and definitely before the peak of the flu season, which ranges between December and January,” said Director of Primary Health Care Dr. Kiran Kumar.
The free jabs are also available at the hospital atrium Monday to Friday, Oct. 20 to Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to noon, and at CayShop at the ARC in Camana Bay from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
The vaccine is effective for one season, and everyone older than six months is recommended to get it, advised Dr. Kumar. People at high risk for complications from influenza, including young children, pregnant women, older people and those with weakened immune systems, should be vaccinated earlier in the flu season, he said.
Companies can arrange for staff get the shot at their offices, at a cost of $200 per session. “Companies that do not wish to make arrangements for immediate flu vaccine coverage for their employees may get it in late November or December as the visits will be scheduled when employed staff time is available,” Dr. Kumar said.
