Robber pleads guilty, granted bail

Matthew Grant, 24, pleaded guilty on Friday to a charge of robbery and was granted bail pending his date for sentence, set for Jan. 15, 2015, at 2 p.m.

The incident leading to the charge occurred on June 26 at Hamlet Drive in West Bay. Grant admitted stealing $263 and a cellphone from a named person and, at the time of doing so and in order to do so, used force against the person. A female had also been charged in connection with the incident, but after Grant’s plea, Crown Counsel Marilyn Brandt offered no evidence against her.

Justice Charles Quin told her the Crown was not proceeding against her. Defense attorney John Furniss asked the court to order a social inquiry report on Grant before sentencing. He also asked for bail; the Crown did not object.

Bail conditions included residence at a specified George Town address, a curfew and electronic monitoring.
