Boat explosion rocks Newlands neighborhood

Updated:The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding explosions and subsequent fire aboard a boat docked along a canal on Hurlstone Street in Newlands Monday night

At approximately 10:38 p.m. Monday, residents reported hearing an explosion and, upon checking, discovered a boat on fire. The vessel was totally destroyed.

Original story: A late night explosion that sparked a fire aboard a boat docked in Newlands Monday rattled windows and sent plumes of smoke into the air.

No injuries had been reported in the area at the North Sound Estates off Hirst Road. Fire and EMS crews responded just before 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Residents in the Newlands area reported hearing one large blast and other smaller “pops” following the explosion at the canal area where the craft blew up.

The craft, which apparently belonged to local resident Mac McLean, was completely engulfed in flame by the time fire crews arrived and was expected to be total loss.
