Swashbucklers, pirates and wenches overrun George Town

Cannon blasts shook George Town Saturday as a motley gang of pirates and wenches sailed ashore on the Jolly Roger to take over the capital and hold the governor hostage.

The annual invasion of the pirates is one of the highlights of a raft of events held during the opening weekend of Pirates Week, that included fireworks, a float parade, a jump from a helicopter by a stunt paraglider, a Miss Festival Queen competition, a street dance party and an underwater treasure hunt.

Thousands of people thronged the George Town waterfront on Saturday to take part in the festivities.

Events continue throughout this week, with heritage days and fireworks being held in the local districts and a food and cultural festival in Cardinall Avenue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The fun continues next weekend with the “Sentencing of the Pirates,” a cardboard boat race in the harbor, another street dance party and more fireworks.
