“Shades of Red,” a wine-tasting gala that benefits the Cayman AIDS Foundation and other community initiatives, will be held at Blue Cilantro restaurant on Nov. 22.
The Rotaract Blue Cayman Islands fundraiser will offer a wide selection of wines from around the world selected by Governor Helen Kilpatrick, who will also attend the semiformal event.
“These wines will be paired with delicious tapas prepared by Blue Cilantro’s culinary team,” said Ranel Grant, community service director for Rotaract Blue.
Highlights include live entertainment, prizes, and a silent auction, with items up for bid that include bottles from the Echeverria wine collection from Chile, a rum cake gift pack, birthday party package at Burger King, stand-up paddle board excursion, paintings, restaurant gift certificates and an advertising package from dms.
Last year, Rotaract Blue raised $3,000, a figure they hope to surpass this year. As a nonprofit community service organization, Rotaract Blue is part of a global effort to bring about peace and international understanding. The organization is also dedicated to international service and professional development of its members.
“Each year we complete a number of community projects, from beach cleanups to home restorations, and hold two big events – one of which is ‘Shades of Red,’” said Grant.
Statistics and information
According to statistics compiled on June 17 by the Cayman AIDS Foundation, to date there have been a total of 119 HIV cases, 68 AIDS cases, and 42 deaths in the territory. Although the biggest demographic of HIV/AIDS cases in Cayman is within the 25-34 age range, transmission of the disease extends to all age groups.
The annual event uses a warm, laid-back and enjoyable setting to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to encourage healthy lifestyle choices that prevent the spread of the disease.
Event sponsors include Ironshore Pharmaceuticals, Dolphin Discovery, and Logic.
“Shades of Red” begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $75 and can be purchased through Rotaract Blue by contacting: [email protected] or any member of the organization. Tickets are also available at Funky Tangs on Shedden Road and J&M Electronics in West Bay.
