Locals can dash through sand to burn Christmas calories

Cayman’s running scene is ready for a festive jaunt.

The 17th annual dashing Thru the Sand run/walk is scheduled for Dec. 26, from 6:30 a.m. until 7:15 a.m. The Boxing Day event, sponsored by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, will see runners traverse Seven Mile Beach, with the start being slightly north of Hemingway’s restaurant and the finish line at Calico Jack’s.

The race, organized by coach Jerry Harper and the Phoenix Athletic Club, is expected to attract a significant crowd. Harper says runners from abroad will compete.

“More than 100 persons from the Cayman Islands, the United States, Canada and Great Britain have already signed up for the race,” Harper said.

Last year’s race offered a one-and-a-half-mile course along Seven Mile Beach, attracting 270 competitors with varying competition levels.

For this year’s event, prizes will be awarded and performance awards handed out for the fastest and slowest runners. Race day registration will be just south of the Hyatt bridge on West Bay Road, with a competition fee of $25. Participants will receive breakfast and event shirts designed by John Broad.
