The EY Inter-School Hockey Tournament saw some great action over the weekend at Kings Sports Centre.
In the third annual tournament, sponsored by Ernst and Young to help raise awareness for the Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club, players represented their respective schools. The tournament started with the 14 & Under league with Cayman wwInternational School playing Cayman Prep. CIS grabbed an early lead through exceptional play and were impressive initially but began conceding costly penalties.
Three power plays in a row allowed Cayman Prep to tie 8-8 heading into the game’s final minutes.
The momentum now swung in Prep’s favor. Jered Holmes and Lex Dobson combined with just over a minute remaining to take the lead 9-8. The lead would hold, as Cayman Prep took their first ever EY Interschool Championship.
The following match had the 6 & Under league and the 8 & Under league compete together for their respective trophies. There were some flashes of brilliance by CIS as Ryder Cali, Hayden Sunley, Ailey Finch and John-Michael Parker created some great rushes down the rink. Cayman Prep’s Ethan Ellis and Kameron Hiryok were the tournament’s most valuable players as they led their teams to championship victories. In the 10 & Under championship game, CIS needed to beat Cayman Prep to stop them achieving a first ever Inter-School tournament sweep.
Kaden Hiryok, Prep’s goalie, was stellar at the beginning of the game, making stops from all angles. CIS keeper Philip Whan-Tong shut down the rampaging Cayman Prep attack to take home the MVP trophy as well as bring the 10U EY Inter-School trophy back to CIS for the second consecutive year.
