Police warn of social media blackmail scam

Two people have reported being victims of blackmail after using adult and social media websites.

As a result, police issued a warning to the Cayman public of an adult Internet website and social media scam that requests personal information from users of the sites.

According to a statement released by police on Friday, detectives from the George Town Police Station’s Criminal Investigation Department received two local reports last week of blackmail from people engaging with strangers on adult and social media sites.

“The public is advised against sharing personal details with anyone over the Internet, inclusive of photographs or videos,” police said.

Anyone who has been subject of a similar threat of blackmail can contact police on 949-4222.
