Wanderers grab league hat-trick

Reigning Heineken Sunday League Champions, OtisAir Wanderers, are champions for the third time in a row.

Last weekend they won for the 16th time this season by beating Boca Juniors 3-0 at Ed Bush.

The deadlock was broken on 10 minutes when Wanderers striker Andre Berghaus fired home an unstoppable volley from outside the box, his 18th this term.

Ten minutes later, Berghaus’s strike partner Rodrick Pearson shot home for his 17th of the season.

Wanderers winger Pedro “Oscar” Filipe rounded off the scoring in the second half to make it 3-0 after tapping home from close range from an offside position.

At the TE McField Annex, CML Claymores enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 victory against Atletico Luca.

CML were in control for most of the match, with two of their players grabbing a brace – Graham Blyth and Baron Solomon – with the other goals from Yannick Solomon and Matt Kitching.

Solomon’s second was the best. After receiving the ball on the half-way line, he used his strength to fight off a couple of Luca defenders before firing home a thunderbolt from the edge of the box.

Luca’s consolation goal was scored by player-coach Federico Destro.

The last game of the weekend was between longtime adversaries Maples Revolution and Fidel’s Old Boys at the Annex.

In an even first half, scoring opportunities were rare. After the break, Old Boys went two up through their strikers Nino Dilbert and veteran Luciano De Riso. Dilbert and De Riso have struck up a fine partnership in recent weeks and they reaped the rewards.

Dilbert made full use of his pace to outstrip the Maples defense and fire home on 52 minutes. Then, 11 minutes before the end of time, De Riso made the game safe for the Old Boys when he grabbed his fifth goal of the season with a well-struck shot.

This weekend attention turns again to the Appleton Cup, with the second legs of the semifinals.

Both ties are in the balance. Boca holds a 1-0 lead against the Claymores, and Harry’s and the Wanderers are at Ed Bush, having tied the first leg 1-1. At stake is a place in the Cup final on May 10.
