Shot fired in robbery attempt

Would-be robbers in Prospect fired a gun while running from the scene of an attempted holdup Monday night, police say.

Two masked men with a gun approached a couple returning home at about 10:15 p.m. on Bamboo Street. The woman ran inside and her husband took a swing at the men, according to a statement from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

The two men ran off down the short residential street, firing one shot as they fled. No one was hurt and nothing was stolen in the incident, said RCIPS Superintendent Adrian Seales.

The two men wore black hoodies. One was about 5 feet, 11 inches tall. The other was approximately 5 feet, 2 inches tall and wore black gloves and a white cloth over his face.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at the George Town Police Station at 949-4222 or Cayman Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.

  1. … and the people in positions of authority continue to leave the citizens of this country defenseless against the ever increasing number of violent criminals.

  2. Mack.
I have to agree with you. But let”s say that one of the intended victims had pepper spray or even a gun deep in a pocket. It would still be pretty hard to use it when the vermin who tried to rob them had the advantage of surprise.

And kudos to the man for having the guts to fight back.

  3. @Norman Linton:

You are of course correct to note that the attacker had the "advantage of surprise". What the attacker would not have known is if the person being attacked was armed with the ability to defend themselves and by the time the attacker figured that out it would be too late for him.

Don’t get me wrong, the ability to respond to an attack and properly utilize your firearm requires a lot of ongoing training and I would never advocate giving a firearm to anyone that has not been properly certified and who is not committed to ongoing training and certification.
