Athletes can start Halloween early by taking part in the Save Our Youth Foundation inaugural Monster Dash 5K Walk/Run fundraiser this weekend.
It is at Camana Bay on Saturday. Registration on the day begins at 6:15 a.m. with walkers setting off at 6:45 a.m. and runners starting at 7 a.m. All participants are encouraged to wear costumes for the family-friendly event. The race is open to all, with strollers and kids welcome.
The race is a loop through Camana Bay and the Cayman International School, starting and ending between Cayman National Bank and the main Dart office at 89 Nexus Way.
All proceeds from the event will help fund SOY programs, including SOY Clubs, which run at John Gray High School and Triple C.
In addition to using these clubs as forums for students to air their concerns about school and suggest possible solutions to school administrators, SOY brings in various mentors to motivate and inspire the young people. They are also asked to perform community service.
SOY Club members have been working hard to help organize the Monster Dash, assisting in registering participants as well as promoting the event. These young people have embraced the challenge, diligently and enthusiastically working together to make the day a success, and will be volunteering at the event.
The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman has been involved with the Monster Dash from the outset.
“Working with the SOY Foundation is a great partnership for us as the organization focuses on involving young people,” said Janette Goodman, the hotel’s human resources director. “We are delighted to be participating in their latest endeavor on developing a walk/run to raise funds for the foundation.
“We are aiding students with skills to help to promote and run the event such as public speaking, organization and delegating. Our hope is they will use this knowledge and apply it to future projects they initiate. We know they will be successful and wish them the very best.”
Save Our Youth is a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 with the mandate of empowering the youth of Cayman by helping them to be leaders, entrepreneurs and law-abiding citizens who value themselves.
The programs and initiatives SOY has launched since its establishment include the annual Football Extravaganza/Family Fun Day, the SOY Achievement Medallion Awards, the SOY Club, the SOY Community Service Awards, SOY Student of the Month Awards and the SOY Second Chance Programme.
