Cayman Prep cruises to victory in primary school sailing championships

Young sailors from Cayman Prep finished the final race of the annual RBC Primary School Sailing Championship in first place to take the trophy on Dec. 11.

Cayman International School followed closely in second place and St. Ignatius came in third.

The championships were held just off the shores of the Cayman Islands Sailing Club.

After 21 races, first, second and third places were anything but secured and it came down to the final race before Cayman Prep took the honors.

Organizers said the racing was intense, with many close finishes and only inches separating first, second and third places.

Teams from Red Bay, George Town, Stepping Stones and last year’s defending champions Prospect also attended the championship.

Primary students from the schools chose four sailors to represent their school in the championship. The four chosen sailors then formed two crews to race their boats in turn.

Youngsters from schools across the island took part in the sailing championships.
